Scenic Acres house fire leads to arson charges against Calgary man

A man arrested near a storm drain on Tuesday has been charged with arson in connection with a house fire in Scenic Acres.

A Calgary man is facing charges in connection with a house fire in the community of Scenic Acres earlier this week.

Firefighters were called to the 100 block of Scenic Way N.W. at 11 a.m. on Tuesday.

Two people were in the home when the fire started, but both were able to get out safely after a neighbour alerted them to the flames.

Fire crews extinguished the fire, which didn’t injure anyone but did cause minor damage to the home.

Investigators found evidence at the scene that led them to believe the fire was deliberately set.

Witnesses provided officials with information about a suspect seen leaving the area at the time of the fire.

The man was identified and arrested in a green space near Crowchild Trail and Nose Hill Drive N.W. a few hours later.

The Calgary Fire Department says he was sheltering in an encampment in that area.

The 42-year-old man has been charged with five offences, including arson.

He’s set to appear in court on May 20.
