Next week, a collection of residential school memorial at Calgary City Hall will be ceremonially transferred to its permanent home at The Confluence. In June 2021, shoes and other items were placed on the steps of city hall, to honour those impacted by the residential school system following the discovery of 215 unmarked graves at the site of a former residential school near Kamloops, B.C., and 751 unmarked graves near a former residential school in the Cowessess First Nation in Saskatchewan. On March 20, starting at 10 a.m., a ceremony will take place starting at City Hall and ending at The Confluence. It’s there where a temporary memorial is being set up until construction of the permanent memorial starts in 2027.
