Editor’s note: This article contains details that may be disturbing to some readers. Calgary police say a two-year-old boy hit by a taxi in a parking lot was then driven to hospital by the same driver. The collision happened at 5:35 p.m. on Sunday near outside the Sunridge Shopping Centre in the 2500 block of 36 Street N.E. Police say the boy was with his parents near their vehicle when he ran into the parking lot. He was then run over by a taxi. Speaking at a Monday news conference, Staff Sgt. Andy Woodward says the 50-year-old taxi driver drove the boy and his family to the nearby Peter Lougheed Centre. “Which I have no problems with,” Woodward said. “He made a decision, which I think was the right decision, with the Peter Lougheed right next door. Had it been any other hospital, then obviously we would have waited for an ambulance to come.” The boy died in hospital. Woodward said while the investigation is in its early stages, it’s believed to be a “horrible, tragic accident.” “He slipped the hand of his father, and then, as kids do, he ran off.” The death marks the 10th pedestrian fatality in Calgary in 2026, and the 33rd traffic fatality overall.
