Access to a popular trail in Canmore remains closed due to a rockslide that occurred last week. Alberta Parks says the transportation ministry is working to secure a contractor to assist in reopening the road between the Grassi Lake turnoff and the top of the hill that was blocked following a rockslide on June 10. Officials say visitors should expect “an extended closure.” “There is no confirmed timeline to reopen Grassi Lakes,” Alberta Parks said in a statement. “We understand that this closure may be disappointing to visitors and local visitor centre staff are available to assist visitors on alternative trails that are open and safe to use.” Open areas of the Grassi Lake trails can be accessed from Highway 40 South and the open portion of Highway 742 northbound through Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, but visitors are cautioned these take up more travel time. Officials say all closure areas are not safe for the public and “enforcement action” will be taken toward anyone found to be breaking the rules.
