Mounties issue alert over phony firearms after risky incident in Chestermere

Chestermere RCMP are warning the public about the “serious consequences” of imitation firearms after a group of youths were found in possession of a replica gun.

On Jan. 8, police seized a toy gun that “closely resembled a real Glock-style firearm” from group of teenagers.

Officials say the gun was “virtually indistinguishable” from a real one.

Police say all firearms calls are a top safety priority and officers always assume the weapon is real until they know it isn’t.

“This incident could have had very serious consequences,” said Staff Sgt. Kathy Klassen, detachment commander of the Chestermere RCMP, in a news release.

“Replica firearms look real, and officers have no way of knowing otherwise when responding to a call. Youth and their parents need to understand that carrying or displaying these items in public can quickly escalate into a dangerous situation.”

The replica handgun turned out to be a water gun and the youth involved were told about the risks and potential consequences of using toys like these in public spaces.

Police say families also need to know to prevent these incidents.

“We encourage families to have open conversations about replica guns and to ensure these items are not taken into public spaces,” Klassen said.

Chestermere RCMP also remind the public that all replica firearms, including Airsoft, pellet, BB and toy guns designed to resemble real ones may be seized.

Other enforcement action, such as laying criminal charges, may also be taken depending on the circumstances.
