New details have emerged regarding a man killed last week while attacking a woman in an Edgemont home, linking him to a missing person. Shahbaz Ahmed died last Friday after the woman fought him off in what investigators describe as an act of self-defence. It has since been confirmed Ahmed was the former landlord of 71-year-old Abdul Mufti, a Calgary senior who disappeared in August 2023 and is now presumed dead by homicide detectives. Mufti was last seen at 200 Falworth Way N.E., where he had been renting a basement suite from Ahmed. Neighbours tell CTV News they saw Ahmed at the Falconridge property as recently as a week before his death. In August 2023, Calgary police executed a search warrant at the residence, which Ahmed owned at the time. He later sold the property and neighbours say he returned to rent the home from last summer up until his death. While police previously identified a person of interest regarding the theft of Mufti’s credit cards, that individual was released without charges. Calgary police would not say if Ahmed was that person of interest and have not officially linked Mufti’s disappearance to him. The investigation into Mufti’s death remains open, and no charges have been laid. Harold Heninger told CTV News on Wednesday that in June 2023, he met Ahmed at the Falconridge home trying to sell an antique car. Heninger says during the meeting, Ahmed held a knife to his throat. The RCMP charged Ahmed in relation to that incident, but he was found not guilty. “He was yelling and screaming at my wife that, ‘If you don’t give me your keys and your cellphone, I’m going to kill Harold,’” Heninger told CTV News. Heninger says he managed to break free and reach safety with the help of a bystander, who called 911. With files from Jacqueline Wilson
