Calgary Stampeders linebacker R.J. Moten was born to play football. “Once I was born, my parents have a picture of a football right next to me. As soon as I was able to touch my mom, there was a football right in my hand,” he said. Moten is following in his father Ron’s footsteps when it comes to playing football. They both played at the University of Florida. Ron was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles, but injuries derailed his career. The younger Moten was undrafted but was invited to the New England Patriots training camp last year and saw some action in three pre-season games. He says he learned everything from his dad. “Just being able to learn from him. I got him tatted on me (to) continue the legacy,” Moten said. “He’s been with me every step of the way. He was able to coach me until I got to high school, and even in college and in the pros I still go back to him for any type of advice.” Moten had four tackles against the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Monday, and Stampeders Head Coach Dave Dickenson has been impressed with what he’s seen so far from the 24-year-old CFL rookie. “What I like about him is his attitude,” Dickenson said. “He’s smart and he’s getting better and he’s willing to try different spots. He’s doing the right things and I think he’s tough. I think he’ll be a guy that if we can grow and keep building, he could be a heck of a player for us.” Moten says he’s grateful for the opportunity with the Stampeders and he plans to make the most of it. “Being able to able to have another chance at playing the sport I love, playing the sport I grew up playing…I’m going to take every piece of advice I can get through this journey,” he said.
