Lethbridge’s Evelyn Beaton won the gold medal in judo at the Commonwealth Games Friday. Beaton defeated Sofia Asvesta of Cyprus 1-0 in the women’s 52-kilogram final to win the Commonwealth title in her debut. The 21-year-old won it in the final minute of the match. “She’s an incredibly tough opponent. She’s physically very strong,” Beaton said after the match. “During the fight, I was just trying to be patient and not give her the opportunity to counter me,“ she added. ”And how I threw her? I do that (move) quite often, especially against lefties, that’s something I’ve worked on and with the new rule changes, that’s a score.” “So it was something I was keeping in the back of my mind, like I have got to be smart with this fight and that (winning move) will (eventually) come.” Beaton’s dad Ewan competed in two Olympics as an athlete and two as a coach in Judo. He was also Evelyn’s first coach. Canada has 17 gold medals overall, and sits in third place overall in the standings, trailing Australia and England. With files from The Canadian Press
