Lethbridge students continue to walk out of class in support of Bill 2-bound teachers

Students in Lethbridge and across Alberta walked out of class on Thursday in a demonstration held to support their teachers.

Teachers were forced back to work by the province earlier this week without the new deal they’d been striking for.

A group of about 40 students at Lethbridge Collegiate Institute (LCI) took part in Thursday morning’s walkout.

This is the second day in a row LCI students have walked out of class.

Many of them wore red as a further show of support.

Many feel it’s now up to them to protest in place of their teachers.

They’re also calling the provincial government’s use of the notwithstanding clause to force teachers back to work an attack on workers’ rights.

“I want to be here, and I want everybody else to be here,” said Sam Olson, a Grade 11 student at LCI.

“The important thing is to not be divided—to stand together.

“(We need) to be in support of our teachers, who have had their right to strike infringed on.”

Another walkout is planned for Friday at Catholic Central High School.

It’s currently unknown whether walkouts will continue at schools in Lethbridge next week.
