Lethbridge man charged with death of senior after bike theft

A Lethbridge senior who was seriously injured trying to prevent his bike from being stolen has died, leading to charges against a 34-year-old man, police said Friday.

Lethbridge police say Cameron Jordon Hamilton is charged with manslaughter, uttering threats and theft under $5,000 in connection with an incident last month.

Officials say on Sept. 10 at around noon, an 80-year-old man confronted the accused after his bike was stolen from outside a business.

A fight ensued, with the man punching the senior, causing him to fall backward and hit his head on the pavement.

The victim was initially taken to Chinook Regional Hospital but was later airlifted to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary.

He died of his injuries on Oct. 9.

Hamilton turned himself in to police.

His next court appearance is on Oct. 23.
