Landmark letters leaving: Banff sign going into storage for a month

The iconic Banff sign that welcomes visitors from all over the world to the mountain town will be missing in action for a couple of weeks.

The sign, a hotspot for tourists, was relocated to the Banff Train Station in late 2025 for safety purposes.

It used to sit in the 100 block of Mount Norquay Road, across the street from the Fenlands Banff Recreation Centre.

The Town of Banff said many visitors accessed the spot by parking at the rec centre and walking over, resulting in a steady stream of pedestrians crossing Mount Norquay Road – which sees some 17,000 vehicles a day in the summer.

The relocation was also a way to help revitalize the railway station.

As part of the move, officials have begun a $1.2-million redevelopment of the area, including the creation of a parkette featuring benches, landscaping and pathways.

On Wednesday, the Town of Banff said the landmark letters are being placed in storage for three to four weeks for the completion of the new park, including new sidewalks and paths, public seating, trees and landscaping.

The sign was initially installed in 2017, costing $350,000.
