Suspicious package at Judith Umbach Library ‘not dangerous’, library free to reopen: CPS

The bomb squad has been called in for suspicious packages in two different locations. They don't believe they're connected.

A suspicious package discovered in a north Calgary library on Wednesday, resulting in its closure for much of the afternoon and evening, was determined to be “not dangerous” by Calgary police.

Around 1:05 p.m., police responded to the Judith Umbach Library at 6617 Centre Street North for reports of a suspicious package discovered within the building.

The building that houses the library is also home to a community health centre, a social services provider and a daycare.

Officers were able to locate the package, determining that it would need to be examined further.

As a result, the library was closed to the public until the package could be inspected by officers.

On Wednesday evening, police issued a release, saying, “Members of the Calgary Police Service Tactical Unit attended the Judith Umbach Library and were able to determine that the suspicious package was not dangerous. The library is free to reopen.”
