Human remains discovered in burnt-out vehicle caught in southern Alberta grass fire

Mounties investigate the discovery of human remains inside a vehicle near Eden Valley, Alta. The remains were found after a fire on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026.

An investigation is underway after human remains were discovered in a vehicle that was burned in a grass fire south of Eden Valley.

At around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday night, Foothills Fire Department, Diamond Valley Fire Department and the High River Fire Department responded to the fire.

Once it was extinguished, they discovered the vehicle containing unidentified human remains.

In an interview with CTV News, Foothills County Fire Chief Alex Marshall said the fire was about 20 minutes west of the Bar U Ranch main building.

He said the fire department was originally called around 8:30 p.m. and was finally fully extinguished around 7 a.m.

Marshall said crews were fighting strong wind and tough terrain over a total of four to five acres.

The fire is considered suspicious in nature. It’s unclear whether it was on Bar U property.
