Heavy, wet snow creates tough driving conditions in Calgary

A new storm, filled with wet, heavy snow, brought more difficulty for drivers in Calgary. Mason DePatie reports.

City crews are working to clean up roads after heavy snowfall throughout Thursday.

“Crews are out on the major routes. Those are your roads that carry over 20,000 daily trips,” said City Of Calgary Mobility Communications Strategist Chris McGeachy.

The city will look to clear priority one routes like Glenmore Trial, Crowchild Trail and Memorial Drive first.

While there isn’t as much snowfall as the city’s last storm, the type of snow — heavy and wet flake — is creating lots of slippery roads.

Calgary police said there were 100 total crashes in the city Thursday. Sixteen of those involved injuries while 19 were hit-and-runs.

Homeowners have 24 hours to clear their homes sidewalks after the snowfall stops.

Emergency Health Services Alberta is advising people to be careful when shoveling snow.

“Try to avoid any, any twisting motions if possible. and biggest thing is, if you feel any pain whatsoever, please stop,” said EHS Public Education Officer Adam Loria. “Choose an appropriate sized shovel helping avoid too heavy of a load.”

Loria is also telling people to use proper footwear when walking on potentially slippery pavement.
