Foggy start to Friday with frost possible in portions of Alberta overnight

Skies starting to clear up in Calgary. Jodi Hughes has a look at the five-day forecast from the Sky Watch Weather Centre.

Early Friday morning temperatures in and around Calgary were mostly between 4 C to 6 C, and as low as 1 C in Bragg Creek.

Portions of east-central Alberta dipped below freezing and a similar situation is expected in some areas early Saturday.

Dense fog formed outside of Calgary overnight and throughout the morning commute.

A fog advisory was issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) early Friday with the agency noting, “Areas of dense fog with near zero visibility will dissipate later this morning.”

Wildfire smoke that entered southern Alberta over the past few days has spread east, but a thin layer will remain over the next 24 hours under a stagnant weather pattern.

As of 9 a.m., the air quality health index in Calgary was a 6 or moderate risk.

An anchored ridge of high pressure will sit over the west for the next few days, pushing temperatures into the mid to high 20s across the region.

In Calgary, the daytime high on Friday is expected to reach 21 C (compared to the normal high of 19 C), and by Sunday will be as warm as 27 C.

Before that ridge starts to track south and east early next week, there is a chance of some isolated showers and thunderstorms forming along the foothills.

This would likely occur later Sunday and should stick east of the Highway 2 and QEII corridors.
