Driver arrested in fatal southeast Calgary hit-and-run

Two pedestrians are dead after two crashes in less than 12 hours. Both happened as they were trying to cross the street.

A Calgary senior has died after being hit by a vehicle in the community of Riverbend on Thursday.

At 7:40 a.m., emergency crews were called to the 900 block of Riverbend Drive S.E.

Officials confirmed the victim, a woman in her 70s, was seriously injured and later died at the scene.

Police say the woman’s family has been notified.

The victim was not in a marked crosswalk when she was hit by the southbound vehicle.

Police said the driver of the vehicle, a man in his 20s, did not remain at the scene.

Police said he returned to the scene to turn himself in several hours after the crash.

Neither speed nor impairment are thought to be factors in the incident.

Investigation is ongoing.

The crash is the second fatality involving a pedestrian within the past 24 hours, police said.

“My advice to pedestrians and motorists alike is the nights are getting darker, the mornings are getting darker, if you’re out walking, certainly be aware of your surroundings,” said Staff Sgt. Andy Woodward with the CPS traffic unit.

“Drivers - speed limits are there for a reason, keep to those speed limits or drive below those speed limits. Again, be aware of your surroundings.”

Woodward said it’s too early to tell if the driver involved was speeding, but enforcement is “high on the agenda” for CPS.
