Dogs take over North Glenmore Park at 25th Dog Jog

Hundreds of dogs and their owners converge in North Glenmore Park to raise funds for the Calgary Humane Society's enforcement team.

The Dog Jog took over North Glenmore Park Saturday.

It was anticipated that almost 1,100 people and 800 dogs would walk to raise money and awareness for the Calgary Humane Society.

The Dog Jog is the organization’s signature fundraiser.

The goal was to raise $275,000 to go toward the operation of the Humane Society, part of which is supporting its law enforcement team.

“This event is centred around fighting animal cruelty which is exactly what we do on a daily basis,“ said Humane Society director of operations and vice-executive director Brad Nichols.

“We don’t get any government funding at all,” he added, “so this is one of our important fundraising events so we can do the important work that we do.”

Nichols said there is a lot of need for the services provided by the Humane Society.

“We keep busy,” he said. “There’s a lot of [animal] neglect, a lot of abuse, a lot of abandonment and those need attention--and we have a specialized crew to deal with those [issues].”

This year also marked the 25th anniversary of the Dog Jog.
