Demolition of Calgary’s former Ogden Legion now complete

The former Ogden Legion is officially gone, according to the City of Calgary.

The building at 78 Avenue and Ogden Road S.E. sat vacant for years after the legion sold the property in 2012.

The site fell into disrepair and became a hot spot for criminal activity, including break‑ins, vandalism and fires.

Last year, an Alberta court ruled in favour of the city’s plan to demolish the building.

Months later, in October, a fire broke out at the site, causing significant damage.

The city issued a demolition order under the Municipal Government Act.

“The owner was ordered to address the unsafe conditions,” the City of Calgary said in news release. “After appeals were exhausted and non‑compliance persisted, the city proceeded with demolition.”

Demolition of the site began in November 2025.

‘Problem property’

The City of Calgary says emergency crews were called to the building more than 100 times since 2022.

Calls have stopped entirely since the building demolition began, the city noted.

“Removing this long‑standing problem property supports a safer community and eliminates persistent risks for residents and first responders,” said Ryan Pleckaitis, Chief of Community Safety.

What’s next?

Now that demolition is complete, the city says the property has been cleaned up and returned to the owner.

“When the city takes action through a Municipal Government Act Order, all costs associated with demolition or remediation are recovered by adding the costs to the property’s tax roll,” the city explained. “The property owner bears full responsibility for these costs. The city can recover outstanding property taxes through receivership or public auction if property taxes remain unpaid over time.”
