Court proceedings against man accused of murdering his children adjourned

Disclosure continues to trickle in, in the case of a man accused of murdering his young children.

One of, so far, three packages of disclosure — the evidence against the accused — has been received from the Calgary Police Service, prepared by the Crown and passed along to the defence.

The other two are still in the Crown’s possession.

Monday in court, prosecutor Carla MacPhail described the amount of disclosure in the case as “quite large.”

The man’s case has been adjourned to allow for more time.

His next appearance in court is currently set for Aug. 5.

He remains in custody in the meantime.

Defence lawyer Clayton Rice noted in court Monday his client is being held “in Medicine Hat Remand Centre.”

Investigators believe the man murdered his children shortly before midnight on April 29, then brought the bodies to police in northwest Calgary 10 hours later.

On the morning of April 30, police said they were dealing with “a serious incident” at 14 Street north of John Laurie Boulevard N.W.

They said the children, a five-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl, were found dead inside a vehicle near the turnoff into the District 3 police station.

The man was taken into custody at the scene and later charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

Police said he’s the one who called them, and that he confessed.

A publication ban was brought forward by the Crown to protect the identities of the victims.

By extension, it also covers the identity of the accused.

The publication ban remained active as of Monday morning.
