A major road work project to provide a smoother, safer commute along Scenic Drive South is continuing to progress in Lethbridge. “It’s been really good,” said Richard Brummund, the road infrastructure manager with the City of Lethbridge. “The weather has been good, so we’ve made good progress and we’re on schedule.” The overall project will include two additional lanes of traffic — one northbound and one southbound — being added to Scenic Drive South from Second Avenue South to the Whoop-Up Drive on-ramp. From there, a second lane of travel will be built along the westbound Whoop-Up Drive on-ramp. “The main purpose is to make that afternoon commute going from work to home — to the west side — much better, easier and safer,” Brummund said. Work on the multi-phase project began in the spring. Crews are currently working on Phase 5. “They’ve been working up the northbound lanes — the east side of Scenic Drive — and also building the ramp, widening it, at the same time,” Brummund said. Brummund says delays are likely anytime a project involves a major roadway, but the city and construction contractors are trying to keep them to a minimum. The entire project is expected to be complete in November. In the meantime, Brummund is asking motorists respect the workers on the side of the road. “They’re trying to get it done by November, so just be patient with them and (keep) following the detour signs and lanes closures as required,” he said.
