The Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwest Alberta has been gifted a significant donation. The foundation announced nearly $3.2 million in support of charitable organizations and projects from David and Shirley Hughes on Monday morning. Originally from Calgary, the Hughes moved to Lethbridge in 1960 to raise their three children. Both David and Shirley passed away in 2024. The foundation says the Hughes played a critical role in launching the foundation’s youth in action grant program, which empowers young people to be leaders and have a positive impact on the community. “I think it’s always important to support youth,” said Charleen Davidson, Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta. “If we can help folks when they’re younger, hopefully they’re in a better position when they’re older and don’t need much help.” The funding will be available through the foundation’s community priorities fund and the Henry S. Varley for Rural Life program.
