Cavalry FC undefeated under new captain Sergio Camargo

Sergio Camargo has led the Cavalry FC to victory every game this season as the team's new captain.

Sergio Camargo is an original member of Cavalry FC.

He’s been with the club since they entered the league for the 2018-19 season.

For 2026, he has a new role; Camargo was named team captain, replacing Marco Carducci, who signed with Halifax in the off season.

Camargo says he’s happy to wear the arm band.

“It’s an honour and a privilege,” said the 31-year-old midfielder.

“I’ve been here since day one and I’ve always felt like I’ve wanted to give back to the club that’s given me a new lease on life. This is my chance of giving back one bit more.”

Nothing changes

Camargo isn’t going to change just because he was named team Captain.

He says if that happened it wouldn’t work; he is who is.

“I think if they change then there’s something wrong,” said Camargo.

“I think I carry myself the way I’ve always carried myself for the last couple of years; I try to influence the club in a positive way, and now with the arm band, it’s just a reminder to keep doing the right things.

“People are looking at me to make a positive change.”

He’s all heart

Head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. says Camargo is the perfect fit to lead the team.

“He’s very infectious with his personality,” Wheeldon Jr. said. “He’s highly intelligent and likeable when he’s on your team, and unlikeable when he’s not.”

Camargo knows his role on and off the field.

He says Wheeldon Jr. even has a name for it.

“Tommy calls me ‘the heart of the team’ – and not the brain – so however you want to take that,” Camargo joked.

“I think I lead by example with my effort on the field. I do get at guys at points, but I mostly let my actions do the talking.”

Wheeldon Jr. says defender Daan Klomp is ‘the brains’ because he’s the quarterback from the back end.

Cavalry will try to keep their undefeated season intact when they host York FC on Saturday afternoon at ATCO Field.
