Calgary weather: Cold start to the weekend with more snow expected

A persistently cold air mass will sit over most of the country Friday as the polar vortex hovers south of Hudson Bay.

Calgary reached their daytime high early in the day Friday with temperatures expected to continue to fall into the evening. The high on Saturday will be peak around -12 C which is equal to the average low.

Light snow fell overnight making roads wet and more snow is expected throughout the day in central and southern Alberta. The heaviest accumulations will be in the B.C. interior, and Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a yellow-level snowfall warning for communities along the TransCanada- especially from Revelstoke to Sicamous, noting, “Snowfall with total amounts of 15 to 20 cm is expected.”

The national weather agency explained, “A frontal system combined with colder temperatures will bring snow to West Columbia and eastern sections of Shuswap beginning midday today and easing Friday overnight.

Another band of moisture will bring a period of snow Saturday morning, with snow becoming mixed with rain by Saturday afternoon.”

Accumulations will be lower in Alberta. In Calgary between 3 to 5 cm is expected from that same system.

It will warm up fairly quickly on Sunday with daytime highs returning to close to average temperatures for most of the week.
