Calgary emergency crews will be sending a reminder to drivers to slow down and move over for first responders. On Thursday evening, police, fire engines, ambulances, tow trucks and maintenance vehicles will be parked at the side of 16 Avenue with their lights on, to bring attention to the importance of slowing down on roads where emergency personnel are doing their jobs. The demonstration will take place between 36 St. and Barlow Trail N.E. Drivers are required to reduce their speed to 60 km/h, or the posted speed limit if its lower, in the lane closest to any roadside worker vehicle that is stopped with its lights flashing. Failing to do so can result in a $243 fine, and three demerit points. Speeding past can result in even steeper penalties, including fines up to $991. A mandatory court appearance is required for any motorist travelling 51 km/h or more over the speed limit. Officials with the Calgary Police Service say slowing down and giving crews space to work, helps ensure everyone gets home safely.
