The Town of Cochrane is asking its residents whether they’d be ready if faced with an emergency.

It could be a wildfire, a flood or a severe storm.

It could be something else entirely.

For Emergency Preparedness Week and beyond, the southern Alberta town’s government will take steps to ensure residents answer yes to the question more often than not.

Emergency Preparedness Week is May 3-9.

The town’s emergency services will be set up at the Cochrane Trade Show on May 2 and 3.

Cochrane Search and Rescue members will go door to door for a mock evacuation exercise in Heritage Hills on May 3.

And the First Responders Expo will be held on May 31.

Jay Judin, the town’s community safety director, says emergency preparedness “starts with awareness and small, practical steps.”

That includes making sure you’re set to receive emergency alerts.

That also includes having an emergency plan and an emergency kit.

“(This year’s) theme, ‘If it happened today...,’ encourages residents to reflect on their own readiness and take meaningful action,” Judin said.

“Building individual preparedness is a key part of strengthening family and community resilience during an emergency.”
