Aggressive moose prompts wildlife warning in Kananaskis

Alberta has issued a wildlife warning for the Upper Kananaskis Lake circuit trail over an aggressive moose.

The warning, issued on Tuesday, includes the south side of the Upper Kananaskis Lake trail from the upper lake day use area to Point Campground (but not including Point Campground) and the Hidden Lake area.

According to AlbertaParks.ca, an agitated moose may show some of the following behaviours:

• Neck and back hairs standing up;
• Ears going back against its head;
• Snorting; and,
• Lip licking.

If you’re charged by a moose, officials warn to run away as fast as you can and try to find a car, tree or building to hide behind.

“If the moose knocks you down before you reach safety, do not fight - curl up into a ball and cover your head,” say Alberta parks officials.

Moose rutting season, a time when they’re frequently on the move throughout the day and night, runs from late September to late October.
