A new affordable housing development is underway in the southwest Calgary community of Currie. Built by Onward Homes, it will consist of a 62-unit apartment building as well as a 10-unit townhouse complex. The apartments will be a mix of bachelor, one and two-bedroom units. Officials with Onward Homes say projects like this are important in order to combat the country’s housing crisis. “The rent we will be charging a tenant in the future will be about 50 per cent of what the market is,” Onward’s Bryan Romanesky told CTV News in an interview Wednesday. “We are really giving a chance to Calgarians that would not be able to enter the market and give them a chance to have a place that is safe that they can call home.” The development was made possible through a grant from the Federal Lands Initiative and the City of Calgary’s Housing Incentive Program. Construction will take about 16 months to complete.
