6 Calgarians charged in ‘complex’ auto theft investigation

Six people are facing more than 100 charges in connection with an investigation into a rash of auto thefts, Calgary police said Wednesday.

Authorities were alerted to the incidents in December 2025, after a prolific offender on probation was believed to be in possession of a stolen vehicle.

Police say a subsequent investigation revealed the offender and several other people broke into five different auto-body shops over a two-week period.

Nine vehicles were stolen and the businesses all sustained significant damage.

In one of the incidents, police say a tow truck was stolen and used to smash through the wall of another business, where additional vehicles were taken.

Police say the group also broke into multiple homes, stealing tools, designer handbags and other property.

On Jan. 7, three suspects were arrested at a short-term rental property, while three others were arrested on Jan. 9 at a different property.

Fourteen stolen vehicles were recovered, the values of which range from $8,000 to $70,000.

“Multiple teams collaborated on this complex investigation. Thanks to that co-ordination, we were able to identify, locate and arrest the offenders safely and promptly,” said Sgt. Ryan Johnson with the prolific offender engagement team (POET).

“POET seeks to help offenders get out of the life of crime by addressing root causes and therefore preventing continued victimization to the public.”

The six accused now face 107 charges, consisting of break-and-enter, auto theft, assault, weapon possession, firearms offences, drug offences and breaches of court orders.
