3 people arrested, $70K in offroad vehicles, cash and forgery equipment seized

Following a four-month investigation, Calgary police have arrested three people in connection with the theft of personal identification documents and several vehicles.

Police were notified about the situation in January after stolen identification documents were used to purchase two snowmobiles in Calgary.

Fraudulent purchases were also attempted elsewhere in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Investigators say the incidents are connected to the thefts of drivers’ licences, passports, birth certificates and social insurance numbers by a group of offenders in November and December.

Police say these suspects used this information to purchase snowmobiles and off-road vehicles as well as rent a property in Calgary. They also say forgery equipment was used to create fake identification using the victims’ personal information.

On April 3, police executed a warrant on a home in the 2500 block of 21 Street S.W. and seized:

• forgery instruments;
• fraudulent identification;
• more than $6,200 in Canadian and U.S. currency; and
• two fraudulently purchased Polaris side-by-side off-road vehicles.

Three Calgary individuals, two 24-year-olds and a 20-year-old, have been charged in connection with the investigation.

They each face charges of possession of stolen property, possession of forged documents, identity theft, possession of stolen mail, possession of counterfeit money among other offences.

All three have court dates next month.
