S&P/TSX composite index down in late-morning trading, U.S. markets mixed

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index wavered in late-morning trading, while U.S. markets were mixed.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 46.43 points at 36,099.99.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 237.87 points at 54,111.25. The S&P 500 index was down 4.64 points at 7,718.91, while the Nasdaq composite was up 80.38 points at 26,443.82.

The Canadian dollar traded for 71.26 cents US compared with 71.30 cents US on Wednesday.

The September crude oil contract was up US$1.90 at US$77.12 per barrel.

The December gold contract was up US$9.00 at US$4,314.20 an ounce.
