S&P/TSX composite down in late-morning trading, price of gold lower

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index edged lower in late-morning trading, weighed down by losses in the base metals sector as the price of gold fell.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 22.87 points at 34,946.39.

U.S. stock markets are closed today for the Juneteenth holiday.

The Canadian dollar traded for 70.53 cents US compared with 70.77 cents US on Thursday.

The August crude oil contract was up 37 cents US at US$76.22 per barrel.

The August gold contract was down US$77.40 at US$4,168.50 an ounce.
