Warden releases statement on new provincial governance announcement

The new legislation is aimed at speeding up decisions, cutting costs and boosting housing infrastructure projects in fast-growing regions.

A reduction in council’s size is what Simcoe County Warden Basil Clarke and county council were aiming for.

In a press release Thursday, Clarke said he wished to thank Premier Doug Ford and Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Rob Flack for their “decision and direction.”

Clarke said while the current model has served Simcoe County for decades, he recognizes a further stream-lining of the decision-making will better support the communities.

“This reduction in the size of council, which was previously recommended by county council, advances our ongoing efforts to be responsive and cost‑efficient for residents," said Clarke.

Decision to downsize County of Simcoe deferred to province

“(It will continue) to ensure strong local decision‑making at county council through the leadership of our 16 lower-tier mayors and representatives from the separated cities."

Simcoe County will be reducing councillors from 32 members to 17 in the new model.

Clarke goes on to say with the current growth, he sees a strong need for a full-time Head of Council to focus on residents and communities daily.

And adds, “We look forward to the province sharing more information about the process of appointment of the full-time Warden position.”

“The county has strong partnerships with the province and our communities, and we understand the importance of supporting both county priorities and provincial objectives,” Clarke said.

“I am confident that our next term of Council will continue to govern very effectively under this new model.”
