St. Peter’s clinches victory in 2025 Monsignor Clair Cup hockey showdown

The Monsignor Clair Cup was back Wednesday morning for the 27th year in Barrie, and students had a blast both on and off the ice.

It’s a battle for Catholic high school hockey supremacy.

The Monsignor Clair Cup (MCC) was back Wednesday morning for the 27th year in Barrie, and students had a blast both on and off the ice.

“A really fun opportunity to hang out with your friends, enjoy hockey, and watch a friendly competition with the other Catholic schools in Barrie,” said Henry Flindall, a grade 11 student at St. Peter’s.

The Monsignor Clair Cup is named after the father of Catholic education in Simcoe County. Boys and girls from St. Peter’s, St. Joseph’s, and St. Joan of Arc taking part in the one-day hockey tournament.

“Well, there’s over 2,000 kids between in the stands and the dance teams and on the ice, and it’s just been a great celebration of our schools since we began this,” said co-organizer Tim Hasenack.

Dressing up in your school colours is a big part of the experience for the students. Those not playing participate in a dance-off in between games. Even teachers have a blast dressing up and cheering on their students.

“Absolutely, we’ve been practicing for weeks, getting into the dances, getting all of the equipment; it’s been an amazing time,” said Maggie Moor, a teacher at St. Peter’s.

“The school spirit is just so beautiful, and like, everybody just—everybody just goes together and has a fun time,” said Milena Gulaeb, a grade 10 student at St. Joan of Arc.

It was a clean sweep for St. Peter’s, winning both the boys’ and girls’ championships.
