Snowmobile riders charged after using closed trails in Tiny Township

Police are reminding snowmobilers that local Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) trails remain closed, after two riders were charged for using a closed trail over the weekend.

On Sunday, officers with the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment were conducting a RIDE check on the 9th Concession in Tiny Township when two snowmobiles approached on a closed OFSC trail.

Police determined that one rider was allegedly driving while under suspension. Both operators were charged.

Consequences of closed trails

Police say riding on closed trails is dangerous and illegal. Closed trails are not maintained or inspected and may contain hazards such as fallen trees, rocks, or unsafe ice conditions. Using them also puts landowners and the environment at risk.

“Snowmobiling is a great way to enjoy Ontario’s winter outdoors, but it must be done safely and within the law,” stated police in a media release.

Authorities are urging snowmobilers to check the OFSC Interactive Trail Guide before heading out, obey trail closures, ride sober, and operate their machines responsibly.

Riders are also reminded by police that no ice is ever completely safe, as conditions can change quickly.
