Six new units offer hope for homeless in Muskoka

The echo of hammers and saws can be heard at 575 First Street South in Gravenhurst.

Work has already begun on six affordable homes, with occupancy expected by the end of summer.

Prior to the current housing development plans, the address at 575 First Street South was the site of a tragic multi-unit residential fire in August 2021 that claimed one life and displaced 18 people.

This transitional housing is part of the District of Muskoka’s $30-million Big Move on Housing program, to accelerate housing starts and reduce homelessness across Muskoka.

“This project is about more than bricks and mortar. It’s about people,” said Jeff Lehman, chairperson of the District of Muskoka.

“Everyone needs a safe place to call home and a chance to move forward. 575 First Street South reflects our commitment to providing housing with the supports people need,” he said.

These six private, self-contained studio units in a side-by-side layout. These homes are built in a factory and assembled on-site. Each unit has its own entrance, creating a small-scale, residential feel that fits with the surrounding neighbourhood.

Everyone is invited to attend the project’s Construction Café on Wednesday at the Gravenhurst Public Library’s meeting room, at 180 Sharpe Street West in Gravenhurst between 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.to enjoy a free coffee with the project team.
