Severe weather moves into the region with several warnings issued

Environment Canada issues weather watches and warnings for Simcoe Muskoka as wicked weather moves into the region.

The skies darkened and the winds picked up as the weather took a turn Thursday afternoon, with Environment Canada issuing several warnings and watches.

The national weather agency is tracking a severe thunderstorm that it says could produce a tornado in the Huntsville, Baysville and Burk’s Falls areas.

“Damaging winds, large hail and locally intense rainfall are also possible,” the agency noted in its 6:37 p.m. update. “This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation.”

Elsewhere, a severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for places across Simcoe County and Muskoka. Environment Canada says a line of storms are moving from Feversham to Penetanguishene east at 70 km/h.

Torrential rainfall with amounts in excess of 50 millimetres is expected.

“Take immediate cover if a thunderstorm approaches. If outside, protect yourself from flying debris,” the agency noted. “Severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.”
