Calgary police have charged a man after he allegedly threatened to shoot another man inside a southwest grocery store. Investigators say a man was shopping with his wife and child at the Woodbine Safeway grocery store on Sept. 3 at around noon when a man they didn’t know approached them while shouting anti-Canadian, pro-American remarks about tariffs. After an interaction, police say the accused threatened to get a shotgun and shoot the man. Police say after store staff intervened, but the accused approached the family a second time before being escorted outside. The accused was identified by police based on witness reports, and officers located the suspect at a nearby home in the 400 block of Woodside Road S.W. When police arrived at the home, officers noted the accused was armed with a handgun. Officers heard a gunshot fired inside the home, but no injures were reported. There were no one else in the residence, police say. The accused was arrested and police seized a loaded shotgun, an unloaded .40-calibre pistol, a glock replica BB gun, loaded magazines and ammunition. Now, 49-year-old James Dean Garriock faces several charges, including uttering death threats and possession of an unlicensed weapon He is set to appear in court Sept. 17. “This was an extremely dangerous situation that could have turned out much worse than it did,” says Staff Sgt. Joe Hebert of the District 6 General Investigations Unit. “Situations like this can change quickly, and thanks to the witnesses, District 6 patrol members, the CPS Tactical Support Unit and other resources across the service, we were able to quickly locate and safely apprehend the suspect before he further endangered the community.” Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
