Police share boaters checklist before leaving the dock

As boating season makes waves across Muskoka, police are reminding everyone that safety starts before leaving the dock.

The Huntsville OPP Marine Unit spent the weekend patrolling local waterways, ensuring boaters were following all safety protocols.

With many people taking their boats out for the first time this season, officers are encouraging everyone to take a few minutes to check their safety equipment before heading out.

Police say having the proper gear on board is not only required by law but can also make a huge difference in an emergency.

Before undocking, officers say boaters should have these items on board:

• One approved lifejacket or personal flotation device (PFD) for every person on board
• A buoyant heaving line at least 15 metres long
• A paddle or anchor
• A bailer
• A whistle or horn
• A waterproof flashlight in working order
• A fire extinguisher if the boat is equipped with a motor or fuel system

“A few minutes of preparation can make all the difference out on the water,” said OPP in a safety message.
