Police ramp up efforts to curb thefts from homes, vehicles with ‘Lock it or lose it’ initiative

A strong message is making rounds in Dufferin County, as police ramp up efforts to curb thefts from vehicles and properties through the “Lock it or lose it” initiative.

Officers with the Dufferin detachment say they continue to receive reports of thefts in the area that police say are totally avoidable. Many of the incidents involve vehicles, homes, garages, and sheds being left unlocked, with valuables left in plain sight for thieves.

Officials stress that these crimes are not typically complex or thoroughly planned. “These incidents are often crimes of opportunity,” police state in a press release, adding that they are “largely preventable through simple, consistent actions.”

Police are reminding everyone to take a few basic steps to help reduce the risk of possible thefts. This include always locking vehicles and buildings, keeping valuables out of sight, securing windows and doors, and never leaving keys, key fobs, or garage door openers inside vehicles.

“A few extra seconds spent locking doors and securing belongings can make a significant difference,” police say.

Residents may also notice a greater police presence throughout Dufferin County as officers continue patrols aimed at enhancing community safety.

The message remains simple from police: Lock it or lose it.
