Package containing $140K of illegal drugs, contraband seized from federal prison

Staff at Beaver Creek Institution caught something they weren’t expecting - a hefty package full of illegal drugs and other contraband.

Correctional Service Canada (CSC) says the seizure happened on Jan. 6 at the Gravenhurst federal facility, which operates at multiple security levels.

Mike Shrider, regional communications at CSC, says the package contained alleged tobacco, marijuana, and shatter (a cannabis concentrate), with an estimated institutional value of $141,250.

CSC says it has heightened measures to prevent contraband from entering its institutions. The agency noted that it continues to strengthen detection measures and work closely with police to investigate attempts to bring illegal or unauthorized items into federal facilities.

“These activities may be related to drug use or trafficking that may threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates, and staff members working at CSC institutions,” say CSC officials.
