Orillia extends storm cleanup services as ice storm recovery continues

The City of Orillia is extending several cleanup services as the community continues to recover from the devastating ice storm that hit one month ago.

City council approved an extension of both free brush drop-off and curbside brush pickup services until May 31, giving residents more time to deal with fallen tree limbs, stumps, and other storm-related debris.

“There’s been a tremendous amount of cleanup done already by both residents, city crews and contractors, and I want to thank everyone for their efforts and patience,” said Mayor Don McIsaac. “Extending free brush drop-off and curbside pick up helps keep the recovery moving forward as we work to restore our neighbourhoods from the impacts of the historic ice storm.”

RESIDENTIAL CLEANUP

Residents can continue placing brush and tree branches by the curb until May 18. After that, city crews will begin a final collection sweep, which is expected to be completed by the end of the month. There is no need to call the City for pickup, but residents are asked to follow a few key rules to make collection safer and more efficient. Brush should be placed on the front lawn behind sidewalks and away from roads, hydrants, and storm drains. No other materials should be mixed in.

Meanwhile, the Orillia Waste Diversion Site is also accepting storm debris free of charge until May 31. The site is open for regular operations, and normal fees apply for anything not related to storm cleanup.

Wood chips created from the chipping process are available free to residents at various locations across the city, on a first-come, first-served basis. These can be used for personal landscaping and gardening projects.

PARKS AND TRAILS

City parks and trails were hit hard by the storm, and cleanup in those areas is ongoing. While many major parks, including Couchiching Beach, Tudhope, and Veterans’ Park have been mostly cleared, others still have lingering hazards. The city advises caution when visiting parks and is asking residents to avoid Scout Valley, which remains unsafe.

STREETLIGHTS

Streetlight repairs are also underway. Some areas are still without lighting due to infrastructure damage. Crews are working alongside utility partners to restore lighting, though the timeline depends on how severely each area was affected.

GARBAGE COLLECTION

Garbage collection has returned to its normal schedule. That means garbage tags are once again required for bi-weekly pick-up.

The City extended thanks to residents for their cooperation and patience as it continues to deal with the aftermath of one of the most severe ice storms in Orillia’s recent history.
