OPP investigating Tiny Twp. protest incident

Provincial police are investigating an incident from the groundbreaking ceremony of the new Tiny Township administration facility on Friday that resulted in one person getting hospitalized.

Nearly 100 people gathered outside the construction site to protest the project, as Mayor David Evans and council officially broke ground on the facility. The total cost of the project could push more than $28 million that taxpayers would be on the hook for.

The demonstration grew tense at times, with protesters surrounding vehicles entering and exiting the site. That is when the incident happened, despite the presence of OPP officers who were there to help ‘keep the peace.’

“At midday, while a vehicle was departing the property, a heated exchanged ensued involving demonstrators and the vehicle driver. OPP officers promptly intervened to maintain public order and ensure the safety of all individuals present,” reported Const. Aaron Coulter from Southern Georgian Bay OPP in a Saturday news release. “Following the exchange, one individual reported sustaining an injury. Paramedics attended the scene and transported the person to a local hospital for medical assessment.”

The incident is now being investigated by Southern Georgian Bay OPP to see if any criminal actions took place. No charges have been laid yet.

“The OPP remains committed to respecting the rights of all individuals to express themselves and assemble peacefully, while also upholding the safety and security of the broader community,” concluded Const. Coulter.
