‘One little calf gave us quite a scare’: Three orphaned moose calves admitted to Muskoka sanctuary

One of three orphaned moose calves recently admitted to Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary is recovering after a sudden health scare that led to a late-night veterinary call.

Staff at the Muskoka, Ont. rehabilitation centre said the young calf began showing signs of distress shortly after arriving at the facility.

“Three orphaned moose calves arrived at the Aspen Valley earlier last week, and while both are now settling in, one little calf gave us quite a scare,” the sanctuary said in a social media post.

Workers noticed the calf had a high respiration rate and shaky legs. “A huge thank you to Dr. Martin for coming out so quickly to assess the calf and ensure the necessary care was provided,” the post read.

According to the social media post, the calf is now resting comfortably and receiving treatment while the team continues to keep a close eye on its condition.

The three babies came from different locations and mothers before finding their way to the centre.

“These tiny calves need around-the-clock care, and we are so grateful for the compassion and dedication of everyone who helps give wildlife a second chance,” the team said.

The non-profit organization rescues, rehabilitates and releases injured and orphaned wildlife around Ontario. It also provides permanent homes for animals that cannot be returned to the wild.

For now, the team says they are focused on helping the young moose gain its strength again.

“The calf is now resting comfortably and receiving supportive care while our team continues to monitor things closely,” the social media post read.
