The Give Back Rack, a non-profit thrift store, officially opened its doors Thursday, offering more than just affordable second-hand items. Located at 128 Penetang Street, the shop raises money for and directly helps people in need in the Barrie community. Volunteers stock the shelves and work with local organizations to identify those who could benefit from the store’s support. “Clients from women’s and children’s shelter and Redwood Park communities can get referred to our store and get free store credit to get the items they need,” said Nikki Glahn, founder of Barrie Families Unite. “Having a storefront like this gives them the opportunity to shop with dignity and choose their own items at their own time when they need it.” The Give Back Rack is currently running a “Fill a Bag” promotion with “amazing pricing on kids’ outerwear,” including two bag sizes for clothing up to size 4T, helping families get ready for the winter season. Opening weekend hours are Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The store is a proof of concept with plans to grow, but organizers say they need more community support through shoppers, volunteers, and donations to expand their reach and offer a dignified shopping experience to more people who need it. “This is not just a thrift store,” Barrie Families Unite posted to its Facebook page. “This is how we help local families access clothing, essentials and dignity, while neighbours shop right beside them and help fund the work.”
