Alberta Health Services is investigating an outbreak of a gastrointestinal illness linked to a Kinjo Sushi and Grill location in southeast Calgary. AHS says there are four confirmed cases and two probable cases associated with the outbreak, all of which are connected to the Mahogany Kinjo on Mahogany Plaza S.E. All of the affected people consumed food or beverages at the location on or around Sept. 18 and 19. “Based on current testing, the pathogen associated with the outbreak has been identified as Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC),” AHS said in a Thursday news release. “STEC is a type of bacteria that spreads when someone comes into contact with food or water contaminated by fecal matter. Person to person transmission may also occur when someone does not wash their hands after using the washroom.” If you have STEC symptoms you’re asked to call 811 or contact your primary care provider and schedule a medial appointment. “Public health officials are working to identify the source of the infection, assess any ongoing risk and prevent additional illnesses,” AHS said. “A public health inspection conducted on Sept. 28 found no critical violations at the facility.” There are no other reported cases of STEC linked to the Mahogany Kinjo at this time. The restaurant remains open while the investigation continues.
