New exhibition celebrates work of Canadian sculptor Marlene Hilton Moore

The Campus Gallery at Georgian College is hosting a new and exciting exhibition called Moments to Monuments: The Public Art of Marlene Hilton Moore.

The exhibition, running until March 21, highlights the public art of Canadian sculptor Marlene Hilton Moore and gives visitors a look at how artworks created for shared spaces come to life.

Six of Hilton Moore’s public artworks from across Ontario are featured, along with proposals that were never commissioned. Together, they offer a closer look at her creative process and the inspiration behind her work.

“This exhibition highlights the public art contributions of Marlene Hilton Moore to the regional arts community and beyond,” said Amy Bagshaw, director of Georgian’s Campus Gallery. “Our gallery is committed to arts education, access to art for all, and supporting artists at all stages of their careers. It is an honour to exhibit Marlene’s public art and to welcome her collaboration with Museum and Gallery Studies students for this exhibition.”

About Marlene Hilton Moore

According to the press release, Hilton Moore taught at Georgian College for 25 years. As part of the exhibition, she shares stories about how each project begins as an idea and becomes a lasting piece within a community.

The exhibition is presented in partnership with the MacLaren Art Centre and Georgian’s Museum and Gallery Studies program. A public art panel discussion with Hilton Moore, Sandra Fraser and Liza Mishko will take place on Thurs., March 19, at 10 a.m. in the Campus Gallery.

Hilton Moore has completed major public art commissions for more than 25 years, including the Valiants Memorial in Ottawa, the Borden Legacy Monument and Ad Astra at CFB Borden, and Wiidookdaadiwin in Simcoe County, states the release.

She received the City of Barrie’s Excellence in Arts Award in 2014 and retired from teaching at Georgian College back in 2010.

The Campus Gallery is located in Room 140 at the D Building. Gallery hours are Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or weekends, noon to 4 p.m.
