New $207M state-of-the-art facility brings 151 new jobs to Innisfil

On Thursday, the province announced that a nearly $207 million state-of-the-art facility generating over 150 new jobs is coming to the Town of Innisfil.

Ontario’s energy grid is getting a major jolt.

A nearly $207 million state-of-the-art facility generating over 150 new jobs is coming to the Town of Innisfil.

On Thursday, the province announced a large investment from Northern Transformer Corporation (NTC), a leading Canadian manufacturer of high-voltage power transformers, to establish the new facility right here in our backyard.

“With power demand rising amid a backdrop of global uncertainty, our government is doubling down on Ontario-made technology, materials, and workers. Northern Transformer is outgrowing their headquarters in Vaughan, and a second manufacturing facility in Innisfil is a big win for Canadian workers, a big win for our grid, and a clear sign that Ontario is ready to lead the nation’s clean energy future. This investment directly supports Ontario’s Integrated Energy Plan, centred around unlocking and scaling made-in-Ontario solutions that create good jobs. keep costs down for families, all while reducing our dependence on foreign supply chains,” said Stephen Lecce, Minister of Energy and Mines.

This milestone marks NTC’s entrance into the large power transformer market, creating dozens of new jobs and filling a critical gap in the province’s energy supply chain.

As demand for high-quality and reliable power transformers skyrockets, NTC’s investment hopes to increase the province’s capacity to support grid modernization and electrification initiatives across North America.

Ontario is also providing $10.5 million in funding through the Invest Ontario Fund.

Once functioning, the Ontario Government says NTC’s facility will test high-voltage transformers with power-handling capabilities of up to 500 kV and 750 MVA.

The province says it wants to reduce reliance on imported, foreign materials by obtaining source wiring, insulation, and electrical steel from Ontario-based suppliers.

Just last year, the government announced that manufacturing accounted for over 800,000 jobs across Ontario.

Since the start, Invest Ontario has announced over $7.6 billion in investments, leading to the creation of more than 9,700 good-paying jobs.
