Metrolinx rolls out body-worn cameras, here’s what GO riders need to know

Commuters on the Barrie line may start to notice something new, a small flashing red light and a silent beep during interactions with GO Transit staff.

This spring, Metrolinx says it’s rolling out body-worn cameras and in-vehicle dash cameras across the GO Transit and UP Express network.

“Research on body-worn camera programs shows that the presence of cameras can help reduce verbal and physical confrontations with staff,” states Metrolinx in a release.

“Cameras encourage accountability for everyone involved, promote fair behaviour during interactions, provide clearer evidence when incidents need to be reviewed, and support greater transparency across the system.”

When will GO Transit staff record?

According to the service, these devices will record audio and video during specific situations, like safety-related incidents, investigations, or when a rider fails to provide valid proof of payment during their ride.

For local commuters, many of whom rely on early morning and evening trains, this new measure is supposed to help reduce confrontations and create a more secure environment.

According to the team, body-worn cameras are small devices attached to an officer’s uniform. When activated, they display a flashing red light and emit an audible beep to show a person is recording.

Privacy and security on the train

Officers will have to notify riders when recording begins. Metrolinx says the cameras will not be recording continuously.

“The program has clear rules and strong safeguards in place to protect everyone’s privacy. All footage is stored securely, with strict access controls so only authorized personnel can review it,” says Metrolinx staff.

Dash cameras will also be installed and used by customer protection officers. These cameras will help capture the same interactions from a different angle, so the team can see a clearer picture of the incident.
