Maj.-Gen. Richard Rohmer attends 80th anniversary of Netherlands liberation

A commemorative ceremony was held at two Canadian war cemeteries in the Netherlands on Friday—a special day honouring Veterans and the fallen.

The ceremonies took place at the Holten and Groesbeek Canadian War Cemeteries, both sites that honour the sacrifice of thousands of Canadians who gave their lives during the liberation of the Netherlands.

Among those in attendance was Retired Maj.-Gen. Richard Rohmer who shared some heartfelt words. Rohmer is the senior Canadian veteran of D-Day, the Battles of Normandy, Belgium and Liberation of Holland.

“I wish to speak to all here who died in the cause of Canada and fought for freedom of oppression,” Rohmer said. “My message is a simple one. You are not forgotten. Your death is remembered, and we are still living souls here, grateful to your sacrifice of your life so many years ago.”

At Holten, 1,355 Canadians are laid to rest. Friday’s ceremony featured moving tributes, including poetry by local students, musical performances, and a moment where 15,000 Canadian poppies were released into the sky.

At the Groesbeek Cemetery, 2,338 Canadians are buried. Canadian flags marked each grave, reminding all in attendance of the deep ties between the two nations.

From the age of five, Rohmer knew he wanted to fly. He went on to become one of Canada’s most decorated citizens and flew 135 combat missions during the Second World War, according to Canada Remembers.

His role in liberating the Netherlands helped free the Dutch people from starvation.

“During the 80th anniversary, we honour Honorary Lieutenant-General Rohmer and thank him for his service during war and peace,” shared memebrs from of the government organization Canada Remembers.

The honourary festivities continue in our region. On Thursday, The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 147 is having a number of events in Barrie to remember what our Simcoe County Fallen and Veterans did to preserve democracy and help end the tyranny in Europe.
