As the summer wraps up, a local library is relishing its record-breaking programming success this year. Staff at Springwater Public Library say both in-person and online programming have had record participation. The programs have been focused on learning and exploration and, of course, reading, including the annual program that encourages kids to keep their books open throughout the summer. “We have two aspects to our summer reading program,” says Amanda Hodgkinson, children and youth librarian. “One is an online component where we challenge our students to read 1,000 minutes this summer. And most of them do. It’s actually really wonderful.” Hodgkinson says the aspect is in-person activities that include crafts, games and STEM programming. One of the most popular activities, she says, has been making slime. As a tradition, at the end of every summer, the library hosts a big party to celebrate and this year, the public is being treated to a trip to the Toronto Zoo. Thanks to the Lions Club and Friends of the Springwater Library, transportation and zoo admission are subsidized so participants can attend for only $10 per person. Library staff say the reduced cost makes the experience accessible to more families. There’s certainly been community excitement surrounding the excursion, as tickets are already sold out.
